A beautiful day filled with fun, learning and celebration Bring your friends, family and loved ones!
The Watamu Conservation Festival (WCF) is an annual celebration meant to bring together artisanal fishers organized in Beach Management Units (BMUs), community members, and conservation partners to highlight the vital role of coastal communities in marine stewardship.
In previous years, the festival relied heavily on traditional fishing competitions. However, these events have faced challenges including high costs (e.g., provision of bait), limited transparency within the fishing competition, and practices that did not fully encourage a positive fisheries management culture.
The 2025 festival marks a new chapter with the central involvement of the newly constituted Mida BMU, who will be empowered in organizing and showcasing their governance practices (through role plays), fisheries data, and management successes. By placing BMUs at the heart of the event, we hope WCF 2025 will strengthen ownership, highlight best practices, and celebrate the artisanal fishing community as agents of change in marine conservation.
The Watamu Conservation Festival centers on empowering coastal communities and promoting sustainable marine practices. Together, these objectives aim to strengthen community-led conservation and foster collaboration for healthier coastal ecosystems.
