Malindi-Watamu Seascape
Welcome to the heart of Bahari Hai’s conservation efforts – the Malindi-Watamu Seascape, a vibrant and ecologically rich stretch of Kenya’s coastline along the Indian Ocean. This stunning region, encompassing the Malindi and Watamu Marine National Parks and Reserves, is renowned for its pristine coral reefs, diverse marine life, and thriving coastal ecosystems. Spanning approximately 30 kilometers, the seascape is home to over 600 species of fish, endangered sea turtles, vibrant coral gardens, and critical mangrove forests that support both biodiversity and local livelihoods. Anchored by the bustling coastal towns of Malindi and Watamu, this area is a vital hub for sustainable tourism, artisanal fishing, and community-led conservation.
Our work here focuses on protecting these fragile ecosystems, empowering local communities, and promoting sustainable practices to ensure the Malindi-Watamu Seascape remains a beacon of natural beauty and ecological balance for generations to come.
The Malindi-Watamu Seascape is Bahari Hai’s primary area of focus, where we champion communicaty led conservation, though we also undertake targeted projects beyond this region when needed and alligned with our strategic focus.
